Story
Butterflies appear when loved ones are near…
Beautiful bespoke butterflies have flown into the Charity Team in support of a very important area in the maternity unit. Sadly, not every baby born gets to go home, some flap their wings and fly on.
We have launched a Butterfly Appeal in support of Maternity Bereavement offering an opportunity to remember a loved one with a beautiful bespoke glass butterfly. Designed by Tim McFadden, the butterflies represent those who have gained their wings and flown on. Our beautiful butterflies serve as reminders of someone you love – whether they were cared for by the Maternity Bereavement team or not.
Each butterfly will be placed in our Maternity Bereavement Memorial Garden in a beautiful display for all to see and remember. As the light shines upon the butterflies it will look as though they are in motion and aims to bring peace and serenity to those watching, in what may be a deeply challenging time.
Team support
The Maternity Bereavement Team at Luton & Dunstable University Hospital (L&D) supports roughly 50-60 new families per year. Our maternity bereavement midwife Sally Sloane, offers support within the guidelines of the National Bereavement Care Pathway standards. This includes things such as home visits, support with funeral arrangements, offering a shoulder to cry on, attending funerals, managing a caseload for the weekly Rainbow Clinic – supporting women through their next pregnancy following a loss – and so much more.
