The above MUST be done to take part!
THE EVENT DETAILS:
1. This is a unique and historic opportunity to support cancer patients needing chemotherapy and their hardworking medical team.
2. We have Becky Jackson, Top of the Pops backing dancer and professional dance teacher (www.facebook.com/80sdanceworkout/) delivering a fun, 1-hour 80's dance workout class, with clear instructions.
3. It's in the double Arena space at the prestigious Surrey Sports Park in Guildford.
4. The Royal Surrey County Hospital are setting up a new 'Chilworth Ward Wellbeing Fund'.
5. It's on Saturday 8th February 2025, 4.30 - 6pm (with entry from 4.20) and afterparty until 7pm, the Arena, Surrey Sports Park, Richard Meyjes Road, Guildford, Surrey, GU2 7AD.
6. Please wear suitable clothing (80's dancewear if you can!) - with trainers (not stilettos!). Bring water, money and not much else. Lockers are available (for £1 coins).
7. There is capacity for 300 dancers (aged 11+) and 100 spectators. With the additional help of caring local businesses supporting the event, we're hoping to raise £10,000 together.
8. For approved supporting businesses, please give a minimum of £250 to have your logo displayed on the large screen in the double Arena space and email me at ktmayne100@gmail.com. Contributing enterprises will also be thanked, such as www.emmalewisphotography.com, our kind and uber talented photoshoot photographer!
PLEASE NOTE:
1. By taking part, you agree that you do so entirely at your own risk and that you are fit and able to partake in an hour's moderately active exercise class. If you want to just 'shuffle' or 'wiggle' on the spot (rather than doing the full dance routines) that is also allowed.
2. There will be a wandering photographer, also taking team photos. By taking part you agree to be included.
3. Once the 300 dancing places and 100 spectating places are booked up, the event will be full and sold-out. We will make that clear, in an edit, at the top of this page. At that point, all later fundraising will only be extra donations for the Chilworth Ward Wellbeing Fund.
MY BACKSTORY:
I (Katie) have had breast cancer twice and received chemotherapy at the Royal Surrey County Hospital in their Chilworth Ward. At the moment I feel well and strong - and want to give back.
This fundraiser is to support the hard work of the 35 members of staff and enhance the experience of their 600 patients each week.
The Chilworth Ward Wellbeing Fund will pay for the 'little extras', that the NHS money can't cover, but that will make a palpable difference to everyone's experience, and a big boost to spirits.
HOW THE MONEY WILL SUPPORT THE PATIENTS AND STAFF:
For the patients -
The 'wish-list' includes radios / speakers to play relaxing music, newspapers and puzzle books, blankets, a range of herbal and fruit teas, handcreams, massage pads and heat pads (both for behind backs as well as for 'bringing up' veins), medium-height, possibly retractable, room dividers to make the larger rooms less overwhelming for patients, fake plants to 'soften' the space, an information board, with useful posters and leaflets related to cancer, 'aroma-sticks' (similar to Vicks inhalers, to help patients with anxiety or nausea), freezer 'mitts' (to reduce the symptoms of neuropathy), 'Limbo sleeves' (waterproof 'sleeves' to protect PICC ports) and maybe even an ice-cream making machine (to soothe those with throat or mouth cancer) - and for everyone to have a little treat!
For the staff -
Items include enhancements to the staffroom, such as storage for the staff bags, wall art and a coffee machine.
Additional artwork -
I am liaising with talented artistic friends, such as www.emmadoddartist.com and www.beccaclegg.co.uk, to kindly donate local landscape paintings to the ward, scientifically proven to enhance wellbeing. These will be displayed (perhaps with QR codes to their websites) and may be rotated every six months and sold (along with greetings cards of the paintings) to raise money for the fund.
THANK YOU.
Katie and Becky xx
