So why am I supporting the Campus Y? The Campus Y has my heart first and foremost because it was my home for four years as an MSA and MSA Coordinator. I think that before any individual can go and serve, they need a connection to their community and the support that comes from that community. The Campus Y is that support system and community that empowers individuals to challenge themselves through service and outreach.
For the young leaders out there, find something small and find something that you're confident in. If you go big, you might end up going home! Large unknowns can be overwhelming and you might feel as if you haven't made an impact. Instead, find something small and achievable to build up your knowledge, skillset, and confidence. Also, look for programs that have something you're familiar with! If you've volunteered at a sports event, look for sporting programs. Also consider your weaknesses. If you don't have much patience for children, look at programs that cater towards adults in the community rather than youth. Also, don't be afraid to ask questions! Learn as much as you can! It's okay to not connect with a program, so try something different if that's what you need!
If I were to start a program it would be one that taught etiquette, dress codes, public speaking, resume skills, and networking. That way every teen can approach college and the professional world with the skills and confidence they need. A lot of kids don't have access to pre-professional programs. Growing up, I had the opportunity to have Y programs in Kentucky that introduced professional attire, dress codes, and business decorum. However, it's equally true that I didn't have access to teen-sized suits my first year and had to raid my mother's closet and throw something together. As I learned more over the years, my confidence grew (and my suits actually fit me).
Snag your tickets to the event and cheer me on!

More about Throwback Prom:
Throwback Prom is an annual event that brings together 200 attendees, including university leadership, current students, and alumni from Washington University, as well as connections across the St. Louis community. Through this event, we aim to foster a sense of community - picture all ages dancing to “Y.M.C.A.” together on the dance floor - while also benefiting the work of the Campus Y.
The Campus Y guides and advises 60 student leaders to coordinate 25 community volunteer programs engaging 800 volunteers in 25,000 hours of service each year. Three staff and the seven member Student Executive Council provide a sounding board for student leaders to ensure community engagement is well-informed and guided by the community engaged.
