Story
Severe flooding has devastated eight districts in Bangladesh—Sunamganj, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Feni, Chattogram, Noakhali, Cumilla, and Khagrachhari—due to intense monsoon rains and upstream water releases from India. The situation is dire as major rivers like the Khowai, Manu, and Muhuri have surged to unprecedented levels, breaching embankments and submerging vast areas. In Feni, over 200 villages are inundated, impacting approximately 200,000 people, while Noakhali is experiencing severe waterlogging affecting around 2 million residents. Cumilla faces exacerbated flooding from the Dumboor Reservoir’s unexpected water release, further straining the region.
The flooding has caused widespread infrastructure damage, including roads and power lines, and disrupted essential services. Rescue operations are ongoing with military and volunteer support, distributing relief supplies such as rice and dry food. The crisis is compounded by health concerns due to waterborne diseases and sanitation issues, with continued rainfall predicted to potentially worsen the situation.

Despite recent economic advances in Bangladesh, poverty is still deep and widespread in the country, with almost half of its population living on less than £2 per day, and over 20 million living in extreme poverty.
Bangladesh’s geographical location, land characteristics, rivers, and climate make it very vulnerable to natural disasters, further increasing the suffering of people who are already living in dire conditions.
Join our efforts to alleviate the suffering caused by poverty and the improve the living conditions of those in need.
