Story

16th November 2023, a date etched on our minds & hearts forever.

The day we received the earth-shattering news no one deserves to hear, my beloved Umi (Mother), has Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer, metastatic to the lungs.

I felt like I’d been punched, I was absolutely winded.

Cancer. What? How? When? And why? From nothing but abit of stomach pain, backache & constipation, to Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer.

The kicker is that if we’d known what symptoms to look for, a whole year earlier, my beloved Umi wouldn’t be facing a life sentence of 3 months, without chemo & 12-18 months, with.

Pancreatic cancer is often diagnosed too late, and it advances quickly. More than half the people diagnosed with this specific cancer, will die within 3 months.

Those stats are frightening.

The horrific vomiting, the severe pain, the bleeding, the diarrhoea, the PICC line in her arm causing constant pain & doubling the risk of blood clots, the depressing prognosis, the complete loss of my beautiful Umi’s thick, long black hair, eyebrows and lashes….

This is cancer. It’s breathtakingly evil and takes so much away from the patient and those around them, who are watching their loved ones withering away before our very eyes.

That’s why this Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month, today on World Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Day, the day my Umi has had her 21st cycle of the toxic chemotherapy, I am asking for YOUR help 💜

I am running the TCS London Marathon, one of the Worlds Major Marathons, 26.2 insane miles around London on 27th April 2025, insha’allah (God Willing🙏🏼) with my wonderful friends at Muslim Runners & think this is an incredible opportunity to raise those vital funds for Pancreatic Cancer UK 💜

The sad reality is research into Pancreatic Cancer is so underfunded and left behind, people are left with only hope to hold onto.

That’s just not good enough.

People like my Umi, suffering with pancreatic cancer, deserve MORE THAN just hope. It’s time to change the story.

If there is a way to bring more breakthroughs through research, more change through campaigning and awareness, and more support for those suffering with cancer, through our expert nurses and information, we need to work together, we need to be relentless because this disease is ruthless 💜

My beloved Umi isn’t alone in this battle, through the hospital stays, the ambulance call-out, the heavy bleeding & the times she couldn’t even open her eyes, I am right by her side, holding her hand, & fighting like we’ve never done before & praying hard for that miracle, insha’allah 💜

Please please keep my dear Umi in your prayers, & wish me well, as I come out of the 12 month hiatus & injury time, to start my London Marathon journey, it’s going to be an emotionally exhausting one for sure 💜

It’s unacceptable that more than half of people diagnosed with the deadliest common cancer die within three months. That’s why they need and deserve more. More research, more funding, more breakthroughs. More than hope. Together we’ll make that possible.
