Story
On Wednesday, December 7th a team from Princes will walk 35 miles from the Royal Liver Building in Liverpool to Sale in Greater Manchester to raise awareness of Motor Neurone Disease (MND) and the impact it’s having on a much-loved friend and colleague.
Sales Director Justin Hammond, 50, was diagnosed with MND 18 months ago. He has worked at Princes for over 12 years.
This challenge represents the 35-mile commute that Justin used to take daily between his home in Sale to Princes’ head office in Liverpool.
The disease has progressed quickly and Justin is now confined to his bed or a wheelchair, is unable to speak and his last remaining movement being in his neck, with his condition continuing to deteriorate.
Before his diagnosis, Justin was incredibly fit and healthy but is now being cared for at home in Sale by his mum and dad as well as his two daughters Rosie, 20, and Tilly, 14, and a series of carers.
We have been staggered by the bravery, resilience and humour he has shown in the most heart-breaking and challenging circumstances.
Justin isn’t just a brilliant colleague but a great friend. We want to do something to show Justin how much he means to us and, whilst we can’t imagine what he is going through, to show him we really care and are there for him. We also want to try and raise awareness and funds to help find a cure for this awful disease.
Motor Neurone Disease (or MND) affects the nerves known as motor neurones which are found in the brain and spinal cord and help to tell your muscles what to do.
With MND, over time messages from the motor neurones gradually stop reaching the muscles and they weaken, stiffen and waste which can affect how you walk, talk, eat, drink and breathe. The disease affects everyone in a different way. The disease is life-shortening and there is no cure.
Please help 'A Walk For Justin' so we can raise vital funds for MND.
