Story
Katie Thomas gave her working life to nursing and midwifery an occupation she loved dearly.
In 1952 at the age of 23 she moved from the family farm in Carmarthen to Newport, Gwent to complete her nurse training. Once qualified she worked as a Theatre Nurse before deciding to undertake her midwifery training in Newport and Neath. As a qualified midwife she moved to London and worked in Weir Maternity Hospital, Balham and Woking Maternity Hospital. In 1961 she moved to Stroud to take a post as a Community Midwife and District Nurse. Initially she walked to all her appointments until she learnt to drive and bought a car. She lived through many changes in her nursing career and continued to work in the community until she retired in 1984 due to ill health.
Cavell (Nurses Trust) helped Auntie Katie when she needed support and I feel she would be pleased to be supporting them now.
Cavell are here for UK Nurses, Midwives and HCAs, whether working or retired, with money and support when they are living through personal or financial hardship, often because of illness, domestic abuse, disability, working poverty and older age.
Put simply, we’re ‘Here for Nurses’.
