Story

In June this year, I'm joining Macmillan's Lake District 'Might Hike' in support of the millions of people who seek help from Macmillan in times of need. I will be taking part in memory of my Mum, Debra, who found the care and compassion of Macmillan staff incredibly comforting in the worst of circumstances.

My Mum passed away from Secondary Breast Cancer in April 2024. She was the most incredible, strong, brave and beautiful person I've ever known, and my Sister, Stepdad, Grandma and the rest of our family miss her so much.

I wanted to do a challenge in memory of Mum. I always thought I'd like to do a marathon one day, but anyone who knows me would know that I'm not a runner (and now I have a Doctors note and spinal surgery scar to excuse me!), so a hiking marathon is an excellent alternative challenge. Mum also loved hiking, come rain or shine there was no stopping her, she was at her happiest when she was out in the mountains.

The route will be overlooking the beautiful Ullswater where she used to sail and in the place she felt at home, so I know she'll be with me every step of the way.

Mum always did so much for others, from volunteering to charity fundraising, even up until her final few months - her last challenge being the 5k Night of Neon for the Christie in February 2024, which she was able to do with my sister Emma and her friends Sue and Wendy.

She had such incredible strength, resilience and determination, and honestly left everyone who knew her in awe. I hope I can channel some of this on the day to get me through.

She, like me, hated asking for money, however what makes this easier is that I'm not asking for me, I'm asking for my Mum and all those who need support of Macmillan in their time of need. So please, for anyone who feels able, please support Macmillan to continue providing people living with cancer and their families essential medical, practical and emotional support by donating (no matter how small the amount). I really am so grateful for any donations and would like to thank you for your support and for taking the time to read this.

Thank you!
