Sometimes people enter your life and make unimaginable impact. They impress something on your heart and you connect in a way that you didn't think was possible. This was me and my Grandad, thick as thieves from the day we met.
Grandad found ways everyday to teach me, to help me grow and to focus on the things that really matter.
He wasn't just a 'typical grandparent', he helped raise me, he introduced me to the things that I love, he was there through every challenge faced, he was always invested in putting a smile on my face (usually through pretty terrible jokes) and he always did what he could to help me succeed in life.
He hated seeing me sad, and so in this moment of pain after losing my special person, I figured that channelling that energy into a challenge like this would be more favourable to him.
Whilst spending his final days with him by his bedside, I was able to see just how special the hospital staff really are. Their patience and kindness is rare and often goes unnoticed or under appreciated. But for both the patients and their families, this makes all the difference. It certainly did for me.
The Addenbrooke's staff always greeted me with a warm smile, helped keep things lighthearted where possible, and they provided me with a space to work from the hospital, courtesy of the chapel, so that I didn't miss a moment with Grandad.
