This Summer, a team of us from Ashgrove vets will be tackling Ben Nevis - the highest peak in the UK - all in support of The Canmore Trust. We will be setting off early morning and committing to a day-long hike up the mountain. This will be a big challenge, not only physically but also mentally.

The Canmore Trust is a charity who is dedicated to supporting the mental health and wellbeing of those affected by suicide. They work with the community in suicide prevention and postvention. By working with the education sector, they help raise awareness to try and prevent suicide as well as aiding research facilities in helping investigate/identify the risk factors that may contribute to suicide. They support affected families and help rebuild the family unit after they experience a loss in this way. These are just a few examples.

As some people may know, mental health is a critical issue in the veterinary profession. Long hours, emotional strain, and high expectations placed on staff and students can often lead to burnout, stress, and even depression. This charity has been chosen by Ashgrove due to the big impact mental health has on the veterinary profession but also due to a close to home experience recently. A well-known and respected vet student we had seeing practice at Ashgrove several times, suddenly took his own life last year. As this charity was set up from similar circumstances and the effect we have all felt from this, we thought it only right. In his memory we want to challenge ourselves while also committing to a good cause.
