Story
I'm Omar, a Palestinian student living in Newcastle. I am currently planning and organising a fundraiser event in Newcastle on the 25th of November at World Headquarters in the name of raising funds and awareness for the ongoing crisis in my city, Gaza.
The concept for this event is to pay tribute to Palestinian and Arabic culture through not only the event's promotion but also through the music on the night, with Arabic sounds reverberating around one of the most iconic clubs in the North East, World HQ.
I would like to dedicate this event to my family that I lost in Gaza in the last month, our family home, which is now buried beneath the rubble, and also the millions of other Palestinians who have suffered, not only in the last month but over the last 100 years.
Despite the inherently political nature of the situation in Palestine, it is not my wish, with this event, to speak in political terms whatsoever. Our message is a call for peace—an end to the violence and the suffering. We have a real opportunity here to harness music's ability to unite people in a critical moment. Music galvanises, and that makes more of a statement than any individual can.
I am working alongside the massive North East collective, Big Fat Rave, and I've already received the support of many other collectives in the city.
I want to unite the music scene in Newcastle to collaborate on something unique, making as much noise for the cause as possible.
We are reaching out to sound systems, artists, radio stations, graphic designers, influencers, and collectives. It requires as many of us behind this as possible in this crucial time. Together, we will stand as Artists against Apartheid.
All proceeds of the event will go to our chosen charity, MAP (Medical Aid for Palestine), an organisation delivering urgent medical care to the tens of thousands injured on the ground in Gaza. Proceeds will be directed via this JustGiving page, allowing those who can't attend the event to contribute and also maximise our outreach not only within our city but beyond.
