Story
Hello!
Since arriving in South Africa, we have both been in awe of its beauty, nature, and the warmth and kindness displayed by its people. However, we’ve also been deeply shocked by how a legacy of colonialism and the apartheid, still reinforces widespread inequalities throughout the country today.
These inequalities are particularly evident in townships, such as Masi, characterised by informal settlements, a lack of basic services, and extreme poverty. The children sadly have limited access to education and employment opportunities.
Over the past 20 years, Masicorp has worked closely with the Masiphumelele community to set up education centres and multiple programmes, giving thousands of children access to a better education and a greater chance to succeed in an unfair society.
This next month we will be helping out at Ukhanyo Primary School, who Masicorp helps support. We’ve seen first hand in the past week how much the kids love attending MasiCorp’s “Maths and English Labs”, and how valuable they can be to their learning. They are often oversubscribed and the children plead to stay longer everyday.
During the next few weeks, we will organise and host weekly bingo competitions for the children, the inaugural “Masi May Bingo Challenge”. We hope this challenge will 1) cause some excitement among the kids and boost participation further, and 2) give our network of close friends & family a small insight into life in Masiphumele, with the hope of raising £1000 for the Masicorp cause!!
