Story

Hello friends,

This April I’m teaming up with my family (team AWARE) to run the London Marathon to raise awareness and vital funds for PSPA.

PSPA IS THE ONLY UK CHARITY DEDICATED TO CREATING A BETTER FUTURE FOR EVERYONE AFFECTED BY PROGRESSIVE SUPRANUCLEAR PALSY (PSP) AND CORTICOBASAL DEGENERATION (CBD).

If you, like me, knew little or nothing about these conditions it’s not to say that you don’t know someone who has them.

Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) is a neurological condition caused by the premature loss of nerve cells in certain parts of the brain.

Corticobasal Degeneration (CBD) is a degenerative brain disease that affects people from the age of 40 onwards.

Both present difficulties with movement, mobility, speech and communication as well as behavioural changes. PSP’s symptoms can be as diverse as the individuals it affects, making it difficult to diagnose early and CBD is often initially misdiagnosed as A Stroke or Parkinson’s disease. For both conditions, there are no simple tests or brain scans to help neurologists diagnose the condition.

PSPA are not only doing vital research about PSP; but leading the charge towards a world where PSP & CBD are comprehensively understood, effectively treated, and ultimately prevented. And with your support that work can continue.

So, who is team AWARE I hear you ask?

A - Annie (me)

W - Will (my partner)

A - Anthony (my dad)

R - Richard (Will’s dad)

E - Emily (Will’s sister)

Richard’s late father, and Will & Emily’s Grandad, was diagnosed with CBD in the final years of his life.

A word from Richard: “having seen the devastating impact of CBD on my late father, we understand the need to find a cure. Knowing that we have your support will spur us on and motivate us when the training and the run gets tough.”

The five of us, as a team, have committed to a fundraising target and any penny you can spare for this cause very close to our hearts will be so greatly appreciated.

Training has begun and you can keep up with our progress on Strava, and I’ll keep you updated on pictures on this page too.
