Story
It is estimated 1 in 50,000 people are diagnosed with an Acoustic Neuroma tumour each year. The tumour diagnosis can mean differing things to each individual who experience a diagnosis. Equally the acoustic neuroma can present a range of symptoms and treatments that have to be considered. For Amy this meant a surgical removal due to the size and proximity to her brain stem in October 2023.
Thankfully Amy gained extraordinary support and was able to access the medical care required to remove the acoustic neuroma. A loss that 90% of patients have to accept is the sudden loss of hearing from the operative side. Throughout the period of diagnosis, surgery and post operative care Amy remained brave and stoical.
It is for these reasons as Amy’s family we would like to raise donations for the British Acoustic Neuroma Association. The charity is small but provides support for all individuals diagnosed with Acoustic Neuroma.
It is a confusing, physically challenging and highly emotional journey for the individuals diagnosed but also for all those around them that love them dearly.
BANA can provide a wealth of support and information to make sense of it all.
We hope together to run the equivalent of 50,000 steps (20 miles) to highlight the diagnosis rate for the Acoustic Neuroma. The run will be on the 5th May and marks the 20th Angmering Bluebell Race set in Bluebell Woodland and the South Downs.
The run is to raise awareness and donations to support the excellent work BANA does each year and to provide ongoing information and help to those affected.
It is also to recognise the bravery of Amy in this time of her life and many others who have to experience and process the reality of the impact of having an Acoustic Neuroma.
BANA’s Vision
“A world in which an Acoustic Neuroma is no longer a life-changing diagnosis and those affected have access to appropriate support by having opportunities to connect, share experiences, have access to up-to-date information and timely opportunities for support.”
