Story
In 2026, I will be walking the entire coastline of Northern Ireland in 20 days starting at Magilligan Point in the West and finishing at Cranfield Point in the South-East. I’ll be doing this in stages during spare weekends, following the coast as close as possible and letting the landscape- and the weather- set the pace.
I am undertaking this challenge in support of Glaucoma UK, a charity that plays a vital role in supporting people living with glaucoma, funding vital research and raising awareness of a condition that too often goes unnoticed.
As an ophthalmic surgeon with a specialist interest in glaucoma in Belfast, I see every day how quietly life-changing this condition can be. Glaucoma often progresses without warning, and by the time symptoms are noticed, vision loss may already be permanent.
I am often inspired by the courage and determination of patients with glaucoma- people who adapt, persevere and get on with life despite the uncertainty about their vision. This walk, in a small way, is for them.
Every mile along the coast is a reminder of the long journey many people face with this condition – Glaucoma UK ensures that people with glaucoma do not face this journey alone. My aim is to raise £10,000, helping Glaucoma UK continue their work while also encouraging more people to have regular eye checks thus ensuring that this trek is about raising awareness as well as raising money.
Thank you so much for your support.
