There has been a church building on the site of St James' Teignmouth, serving the local community, since the 12th century. The original church was consecrated a while later in 1268.

By the 19th century the old church had fallen into disrepair but under the guidance of Admiral Sir Edward Pellew (of Bitton House), the tower was restored and the nave rebuilt in its current unusual octagonal shape.

Over 200 years later, the building requires continual maintenance and repair, in particular the unique roof lantern is now in desperate need of renovation. We are grateful to the Devon Historical Churches Trust for their financial support.

With others from the Mission Community and beyond, I intend to "Stride" around all eight of the churches in the extended Haldon Mission Community on Saturday 14th September. We will be visiting all the member churches, starting in Teignmouth, calling at Shaldon, Ringmore, Bishopsteignton, Luton and Ideford (for a Cream Tea if we can manage it) before finishing at St Nectan's church in Ashcombe.

Please give generously to support the work of the Devon Historic Churches Trust, so that they can continue to help fund the essential repair and maintenance of our beautiful historic churches across Devon, including St James'.
