Fundraising for Brecon Mountain Rescue Team
In January 2025, I will aim to complete the Beacons Way solo, to raise money for Brecon Mountain Rescue. This challenge involves walking the entirety of the Brecon National Park/ Bannau Brycheiniog National Park, beginning in Abergavenny, and finishing in Llangadog.
I will have 5 days to complete the challenge, this is half the allotted time usually taken to complete this route. I will traverse 100 miles in total, covering an average of 20 miles per day, whilst carrying a pack weighing 15 Kg plus water and food. The event will be completed with minimal support throughout the challenge.
Brecon Mountain Rescue is a local charity that was formed in 1968 when they would work out of a member’s car and have an average of 15 call outs per year. The operation is significantly greater and now averages between 120 and 140 call outs for search and rescue missions, on mountains, rivers, forests, and farmland to name a few. The money required to sustain this essential service has significantly increased due the rise in cost of living. The team have significant overheads to operate and maintain services at the HQ building, which includes vehicles, a range of technical equipment, training, and protective clothing for the team.
