Story
It's that time of year again when I put on my boots, roll up my airbed, grab my sleeping bag and set off with others on a five day walk to raise awareness of the impact of indefinite immigration detention. And hopefully raise some money too.
This year's Refugee Tales walk (6th to 10th July) is from Edenbridge in Kent to Westminster.
One day I hope that the situation will change and we won't need to do this.
But until then, we'll keep walking . . .
GDWG is a small charity that makes a big difference to people held in immigration detention at Gatwick and after detention too. People in detention are held indefinitely and the uncertainty of how long they will be detained has a terrible impact on mental and physical health. For over 25 years GDWG visitors have been offering friendship to strangers, bearing witness to the realities of detention and making weekly visits to people who would otherwise be isolated. The stories of people who have been detained are shared in four volumes of 'Refugee Tales' published by Comma Press and every year on a long walk the stories are shared in evening events. This is a tough time for small charities, so please show your support for those whose plight is frequently invisible and give generously to GDWG and Refugee Tales.
