Story
This is a shared page for different events raising money for the South West Recovery Fund, so please do shout out in the comments who you are sponsoring and for which event, so fundraisers can see their supporters.
Addiction can feel like an isolating, lonely and dangerous place. Time and time again behind the story is trauma, loneliness, or the need to escape. It can affect anyone, at any time of life.
In the South West region of Humankind, we have services that support people to make positive changes around their drug or alcohol use and we know that ‘recovery’ is about so much more than just stopping a substance. It is about learning to live, to reconnect with ‘self’, it is (re)connecting with family and friends – old and new, discovering hobbies and interests, learning new skills, new thinking patterns, it is about giving back to others and being grateful for what we have. But have no illusions - it is hard, and scary, and sometimes we just don’t know where to begin.
The Recovery Fund aims to provide a stepping stone to people by offering small individual grants based on personal goals. It is open to everyone in service and was initially created by a group of service users, staff , volunteers and trustees who wanted to make life in recovery a little easier. Examples of grants include:
- Art supplies to offer a space for expression
- Fishing equipment for mindfulness
- A kayak to support fitness and getting outdoors
- A tablet to engage in online courses
- Computer software for photo editing to express creative dreams
- Household décor to create a safe, comfy space to call home.
We’ll be raising funds throughout the year over a variety of events and activities. September is important to us as it is national Recovery Month – a time to celebrate the joys of recovery – so keep an eye out for updates and join us, support us and donate! You might just play a part in saving someone’s life.
