Story
Girl Scouts of Connecticut has had an undeniable impact on both my and my daughter, Pip's, lives. As her troop leader, I have shared amazing experiences with her ranging from baking competitions, camping, white water rafting, and indoor skydiving, to making prosthetic limb prototypes, seeing Broadway shows, saving sea turtles, and having art lessons with senior citizens.
But the most profound experience Girl Scouts has given us is that of female friendship and community. Pip's troop formed when they were in Kindergarten (7 years ago!) and is a complete mix of girls. We have a baker, a gymnast, a debater, a dancer, an actor, a softballer, a writer, a cheerleader, a scientist, and a musician. They are all incredibly different and socialize in different circles. Yet, they come together a few times a month for a Girl Scout meeting or event and are the best of friends. They support each other, laugh with & at each other, and challenge each other. To navigate and nurture relationships like this is such an important skill for girls to carry through to adulthood. I am so proud to be their troop leader.
Now, as a Membership Experience Specialist for GSofCT, I get to connect with and make a difference in the lives of girls from ALL OVER THE STATE! What an honor.
One in five girls in Connecticut currently identifies as disconnected. We have the unique opportunity to help girls feel safe and build relationships with strong women mentors.
