Story
I’m excited to be swimming the English Channel this July 2024 with 3 other amazing relay team members. We are all passionate about swimming and are using this passion to raise money for a remarkable charity Mencap, with the Mencap Marvels.
What does this mean?
We’ll swim the channel under the strict Channel Swim Association regulations. So, only wearing a regular swimsuit, goggles and hat (no wetsuits, no neoprene!). We’ll start in Dover and take it in turns to swim an hour until we reach France!
This is the toughest challenge I’ve ever attempted. The swim could start at night, so we are practicing night swimming as part of our training. We’ll be crossing one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes, and we could well encounter jellyfish, seals or dolphins close up as we swim!
We have been training hard for many months, to ensure we are ready for our Channel qualifier in early June. To qualify to attempt the Channel swim, we each have to complete a 2 hour swim in just swimming costume, hat and goggles in water temperatures less than 15.5 Celsius under stringent Channel Swim Association observation. Success here grants us the official “license” to make our channel swim attempt.
Come July, we’ll have a week of being “on call”, ready and waiting until the pilot says the conditions are right and we need to go straight down to Dover to start our channel swim!
I am proud to be taking on this challenge to strive to raise funds for Mencap. Mencap’s vision is for the UK to be the best place in the world for people with a learning disability to live happy and healthy lives. Through this gruelling swim challenge and with your support we hope to be able to raise valuable funds for this amazing charity.
