Story
We have chosen to fundraise for Fight For Sight to specifically fund research for a treatment and/or a cure for Stargardts Disease. 2 of our 3 beautiful daughters have been diagnosed with this genetic and degenerative condition and as a result are loosing their central vision. They are both registered Blind. Lucy was diagnosed when she was 12 years old and Chloe was 11 years old.
It all started when Lucy told us that she couldn’t see the car in front of us when we were driving, she struggled to see the whiteboard at school too.We had many trips to the optician and ophthalmologist and it took almost a year for Lucy to be diagnosed. Chloe was struggling seeing work at school too and was quickly diagnosed given that her sister had already been diagnosed with this genetic disease.
Loosing their central vision has meant that the girls can no longer read standard size text, they cannot recognise faces, they will never drive, they cannot read signage making navigating new places difficult, they cannot read price/size tags whilst out shopping. They rely on their peripheral vision which makes close up work or watching TV a challenge. Their school work has to be adapted to larger font or they work on an iPad with accessibility features. They have faced so many challenges and are both determined to overcome every single one.
Lucy’s happy place is with her horse Jessie, they compete against able bodied riders in show jumping, cross country and dressage.
Chloe loves ice skating and is working her way through the levels to learn all the skills.
Both Lucy and Chloe love their hobbies and will never let Stargardts stop them doing what they love.
At present there is no cure, but Fight for Sight are leading the way with some promising research and trials and we are hopeful that one day there will be a treatment and/or cure for them and others just starting out on this journey.
This fundraiser is so close to our hearts and we hope to raise £10,000 for our Booker-Wilson’s Stargardt’s Family Fund.
