Story
I will be jumping out of a perfectly good aeroplane (with an instructor!) from 15,000 feet. The air temperature will be 30 degrees C below surface, with half as much oxygen and we will reach 120mph after 5 seconds in freefall. I have never done it before and am quite nervous, but its for a great cause, so please support generously!
University Hospital Southampton is quite literally at the cutting edge of cancer surgery with one of the most successful robotic surgery programmes in the UK.
Robotic surgery enables the most complex and difficult cancer operations to be done with small "keyhole" surgery incisions rather than a very large open incision. Compared to conventional keyhole surgery many more patients can be operated on in this way due to the advanced technology that the robot uses. This means that patients can recover more quickly with fewer complications and get back to living their lives in the best way possible.
However compared to some of our neighbouring hospitals, we are under-resourced with only two robots that can help us to perform the most demanding and difficult operations which means that hundreds of patients each year are not being able to access this ground-breaking and life-changing technology,.
PLANETS Cancer Charity, aims to fund a new surgical robot for Southampton General Hospital, to be used on cancer patients across the South Central coast of England that are referred to Southampton thereby ensuring that as many patinets as possible can access this transformational technology and treatment for a wide range of cancers.
