Story

Written by Dad -

In December 2022, my son Alfie's life took an unexpected turn. After nine years of unknowingly living with several underlying health conditions, he received a diagnosis that altered his world forever. The compassionate team at Alder Hey swiftly stepped in, conducting numerous scans and initiating an initial surgery to address some of Alfie's health issues. Despite their efforts, Alfie now faces irreversible bladder and kidney damage, necessitating lifelong monitoring and management.

Over the past 14 months, Alfie has undergone five surgeries, endured extended hospital stays, and attended countless appointments with various medical specialists. Throughout these challenges, Alfie has demonstrated remarkable courage, maintaining a strong bond with the caring staff at Alder Hey who have supported him during his medical journey. For Alfie, Alder Hey remains a sanctuary where he feels safe and reassured, knowing he will receive exceptional care during future visits.

Recently appointed as an ambassador for Alder Hey Children's Charity, Alfie's dedication to fundraising, positive outlook, and inspirational demeanour have been recognised. This role not only acknowledges his past contributions but also empowers him to continue advocating for the hospital that has become his second home. Eager to further contribute, Alfie aspires to join the Alder Hey Youth Forum, where he can leverage his experiences to shape the future of healthcare for fellow paediatric patients.

In solidarity with Alfie's charitable endeavours, we are eager to support his upcoming fundraising walk. On May 14th, alongside Oli and numerous other children, Alfie will walk 3 kilometres around Knowsley Safari Park, raising funds for the invaluable Alder Hey Children's Charity.

In the past 10 years the charity has raised over £65 million, facilitating the acquisition of life-saving equipment, funding crucial research endeavours, and driving healthcare innovation. Moreover, it ensures that every child and adolescent receives the "Alder Hey magic" – those extra touches that enhance the hospital experience for patients and their families.

From bedside musicians and engaging art workshops to cutting-edge distraction technology, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital remains committed to providing unparalleled patient care. Supported by Alder Hey Children's Charity, these initiatives surpass the standard offerings of the NHS.

That's the magic of Alder Hey.
