Story
It is an honor to be able to run for such an incredible hospital that holds such a special place in my heart. This marathon is more than just crossing the finish line, it’s about giving back to the hospital that played an instrumental role in making it possible to continue to live my life to the fullest. At a young age, I was diagnosed with neurofibromatosis, resulting in a benign tumor in the thoracic area of my spine. I was referred to the Hospital for Special Surgery where I met a brilliant and gifted doctor, Daniel Green, MD, MS, FAAP, FACS. Not only was Dr. Green determined to repair the damage to my spine, he was intent on making sure that I would continue to live my life without limitations. When I look back at this time, I don’t remember the difficulties or pain I endured, instead, I remember the care I received, the staff who visited me during my recovery, and the different therapeutic activities they did with me, always taking the extra step to make me smile. I remember Dr. Green, always wearing a funny tie and telling me jokes during every visit. I am thankful for the care I received and the opportunity to run for Team HSS in the NYC Marathon. NYC is an amazing place that reminds me of a special time in my life rather than a hard one. After each doctor’s visit, I always did something fun in the city with my family, going to a fun restaurant, going to a New York Rangers game, or doing something spontaneous. These memories are what I remember rather than the pain and scary times. I would not be where I am today without the support of my doctors and family, who helped me overcome countless challenges. Hospital for Special Surgery is so much more than just a hospital, it is a place filled with hope, love, and resilience with a dedicated team of talented, kind, and compassionate staff. Accordingly, I am raising money to give back to the Penny Doerge Adaptive Academy at HSS. The Penny Doerge Adaptive Academy (PDAA) organizes local and regional adaptive programs for HSS patients facing a range of disabilities. These events help patients realize new skills and interests, reinforce therapy goals, and allow patients to socialize with other patients, all while promoting mobility and activity. Some examples of past PDAA events include skiing, surfing, horseback riding, water skiing, and rock climbing. These experiences encourage mobility and independence and often result in increased self-esteem, self-confidence, and motivation to live fuller, more active lives.
