Story

I'm taking part in an 'chilling' plunge into cold water on Sunday 30th March for St Richard's Hospice. The water can be between 9 and 11 degrees at this time of year 🥶

Your donation, no matter the size, plays a crucial role in supporting individuals and families facing challenging times. Your support is not just meaningful to me but also to those who benefit from St Richard's Hospice.

Last year aged 59 I finally braved the plunge into wild swimming. It was something i had wanted to do for a few years but never had the courage. Lack of self confidence, body confidence, etc has held me back for a large part of my life. I don’t believe I’ve ever, or will ever, achieve my true potential. However there is always time. Time to change. Time to make a difference. Until there isn’t time. Now is my time. In March I turn 60! I’ve no idea how I’ve gotten this old. There are things I want, and need, to do with the rest of my life.

In January 2022 in preparation for my life move to Worcester I went to work at St Richards Hospice cafe where I worked with over seventy volunteers whose experiences of the hospice often moved me to tears. For the first time in my life I had the absolute privilege of working with young adults with different needs who volunteered in the cafe, gaining valuable life experience. I taught them coffee art. They taught me understanding, acceptance and how to make the best milkshakes in Worcester!

My next challenge was a working move to Elite Recovery in Droitwich where I met the most amazing Pickering family with a strong connection to St Richards Hospice. Beautiful soul Gabrielle working for them in a care capacity, and the family holding regular fund raising events to enable the wonderful work of this great hospice to continue to bring comfort and love to so many families.

Unfortunately Dave Pickering, founder of Elite Recovery, passed away in June last year after a brief but brutal battle with Covid. His passing has left a huge hole in the lives of so many people, including family, friends and across our industry. Dave was the most incredible boss, mentor and friend. The only person I’ve ever worked for who thanked every member of his staff personally at the end of their shift without fail.

So can I please ask you all to support and sponsor me in the Penguin Plunge Challenge on March 30th in memory of a great man, and as a tribute to the wonderful staff and volunteers of St Richards and to Time. The most precious gift we are given, not always appreciated, and too frequently taken from us far too soon.
