Story
Jacari is a small, dynamic charity providing tutoring and fun activities to refugee, asylum-seeking and migrant children aged 6-16 who use English as an additional language and are struggling at school. We work in Bristol and Oxford, partnering with local schools to identify EAL pupils most in need of our support - those that are newly arrived in the UK, who need support with English so they can succeed in school, and live in deprived areas of the cities.
Our tutoring is delivered by volunteers who are mostly university students, who are more than a tutor to young EAL pupils. They provide them with a trusted mentor and friend, who helps them build their confidence and aspirations to consider further education.
Our volunteer tutors visit their Jacari pupil weekly during term-time either in their school or at home. We provide volunteers with training, teaching resources and games to use in their sessions, along with regular support and check-ins.
I'm committing to walking 300,000 steps in May and to raising £500 for Jacari. Any donation, however small, will help. Many thanks!
