Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I am running the TCS London Marathon this April to help UHCW Charity raise money to fund revolutionary equipment and offer better outcomes for many more patients. If you are able to support me, I would be very grateful if you would be kind enough to sponsor me via my just giving page.

1 in 2 of us will have cancer during our lifetimes. If you or someone you love is diagnosed with a cancerous tumour you want the best treatment, with the tumour being removed, where viable, as swiftly as possible.

Traditional open surgery involves lengthy recovery times, with weeks in Critical Care and months in hospital, along with many months recuperating at home. There is significant blood loss and a high risk of complications, large dosage pain medication is needed for post-surgical pain for some time, there is a risk of infection and a substantial number of stiches are needed that limit mobility and require frequent changes in dressings. When tumours are removed using Robotic Surgery, just three tiny incisions are made for probes to be inserted and the tumour is removed. Recovery from this minimally invasive technique involves a short hospital stay, often just a night or two, with healing at home, usually in just a few weeks.

University Hospital Coventry is one of the leading centres in the UK for Robotic Surgery, treating cancer patients robotically from Coventry, Warwickshire and beyond. However, to increase the number of patients that can be treated using Robotic Surgery a further robot is needed along with a specially designed operating table that allows the surgeon to rotate the patient during surgery to give the best access for tumour removal. UHCW Charity is fundraising for this and for two dual control surgical consoles so that surgeons can be trained in real time, across the UK. The additional robot would also be used for cardiothoracic surgery, offering these pioneering techniques to patients needing surgery for heart and lung conditions.

Thank you very much,

Alex
