Story
Since I ran the TCS London Marathon for the 1st time in 2022 I have been thinking about my next challenge!
The idea that we raised nearly £5000 for Clatterbridge Cancer Charity really inspired me to do more.
7 months ago, my Dad was diagnosed with terminal cancer.
He has undergone chemotherapy and is now on a trial trying to slow the cancer down and he is still being positive! This has inspired me to not only go again, but to do more!
His attitude of, "I am not dying of cancer, I am living with cancer", is pushing me further. This has been, and still is, a very difficult time for me and all of my family. Treating cancer patients entails so many sacrifices by so many people that I feel this is the time to give something back.
That is why I am doing 2 marathons in 2 days this time!
I was looking at ways to combine 2 of my passions, the place that I have lived forever and Tranmere Rovers, and that is where the idea of a Wirral marathon has come from.
The Wirral Marathon will commence on Saturday 20th April 2024, starting at the Wirral site of Clatterbridge Hospital, Cancer Charity Department (VERY early start – details to be confirmed) and finishing at Prenton Park (my theatre of dreams) before the home game v AFC Wimbledon. We will then travel to London to run the TCS London Marathon on Sunday 21st April 2024.
As well as this page there will be donation buckets available while I am running and at the Tranmere fixture to help add to the total raised. There will also be the opportunity to donate an amount to run legs of the Wirral Marathon with me wearing green, the colour of the Clatterbridge Cancer Charity as well as raffles to get as many donations as possible.
The Wirral and Merseyside is my home, my safe place, and I see all the good that Clatterbridge Cancer Hospital does in the area and beyond. We all sadly know someone who has been treated there and the care that has been given. A number of my work colleagues have had family members treated there recently and have spoken very highly of the support and care they have received from Clatterbridge Cancer Hospital.
This is my opportunity again to use my lucky platform of being a super proud Tranmere fan and ex-professional player to help the local area and people.
I understand how difficult it is in current times for people to put food on their table and heating in the house so whatever small donation can be made will make the difference. Donate the price of a pint to get me by!
Cancer has and will touch us all in some way. We only beat it together and this will be a tiny step to help so many in our amazing communities, let's support them together.
Thanks
Alex
