Escape from Alcatraz: A Triathlon like no other!
Have you ever wondered about those daring individuals who attempted to escape Alcatraz in the 1960s by swimming across the shark-infested San Francisco Bay? While their fates remain uncertain, what we do know is that this swim is considered one of the most challenging and dangerous in the world. Fast forward a few decades, and it has become a thrilling race and the first leg of a unique triathlon!
Escape from Alcatraz is one of the world's most iconic triathlon challenges. Participants are taken by boat to the legendary island, where they jump off and swim 2.4 km to the shore. The journey continues with an 29km bike ride through the hilly terrain of San Francisco, followed by an 13km trail run, including the infamous sand ladder, finishing at Marina Bay.

I've secured an international place for this event taking place on the 31st May 2025 and have been training diligently since November with my coach to ensure I complete it in a competitive time. Normally, I participate in these races quietly, without promotion. However, after the recent passing of my mother, Sheena, from Dementia, I've seized this opportunity to raise funds for Dementia UK. Many people I speak with know someone affected by dementia, and Dementia UK supports those facing this challenging journey.
This year has been a rollercoaster of highs and lows. Earlier, I qualified for the European and World Duathlon Championships, where I'll proudly represent my country in my age group, and plan to wear my Age Group Team GB colours for the Alcatraz race. Turning 60 this year, I never imagined I'd still be pushing myself this hard. So, if you're questioning whether you're too old to try something new or take on an even bigger challenge, think again!
Thank you for reading my story and for any donations you make to Dementia UK. (For my Cisco colleagues, any donations will be matched through the giving back process—click here https://cisco.benevity.org/request-a-match ).

You will be able to track my progress on the day live through the official app that I will post here nearer the time.
