Story

A Family’s Journey from War to Hope

Right now, a family of six from Gaza — Ahmed, his wife Mona, their 17-year-old daughter, two teenage sons aged 15 and 13, and their 9-year-old daughter — are stranded in Cairo, Egypt. They fled unimaginable violence and destruction in Gaza, carrying only what they could.

They are safe for the moment, but they have no permanent home, no income, and the children are not allowed to attend school. The Egyptian Government classifies them as illegal immigrants, leaving them with no stability or security for their future.

We are a group of friends and residents in Totnes, Devon, working to sponsor this family to come to the UK legally under a Skilled Worker visa, which has already been approved by the UK Home Office.

Who We Are

We’re a grassroots team from Totnes — neighbours, teachers, parents, and volunteers — who believe that everyone deserves safety and dignity. Our community has a strong record of welcoming refugees, and we are ready to offer housing, support, and friendship as this family begins to rebuild their lives.

About Ahmed

Ahmed Sager, the father of the family, is a respected cultural organiser and musician. He represented the Palestine Music Expo (PMX) in Gaza and organised five children’s music festivals there between 2021 and 2023, bringing joy, creativity, and hope to tens of thousands of young people living under blockade.

Since arriving in Egypt, Ahmed has continued his mission to support others. In 2025, he launched a programme for Gazan refugee musicians in Cairo, providing instruments, rehearsal space, concerts, and access to psychotherapy — helping artists heal and express themselves through music even in exile.

Once in the UK, Ahmed will continue his work with PMX, supporting Palestinian musicians worldwide, building international connections and opportunities for artists whose lives and livelihoods have been disrupted by conflict.

Ahmed’s resilience and dedication to his community embody the spirit of hope and creativity that Totnes celebrates. We are eager to welcome him, Mona, and their four children into our town.

What We’re Raising Funds For

To bring this family to Totnes, we need to raise around £4,000. This will cover:

🏠 Initial housing costs and deposits

🧺 Essential living expenses for their first six weeks in Totnes

The family has already paid approximately £26,000 in UK visa fees and flights — exhausting all their savings in the process. Despite this, they remain determined to build a safe and stable future for their children.

Every pound donated will go directly to helping this family start anew in our community.

Why It Matters

This family has endured years of siege and war, the destruction of their home, and the loss of loved ones. Yet even through displacement and uncertainty, they have continued to create, give back, and hold on to hope.

Their dream is simple: to live in peace, to work, and to see their children go to school without fear — surrounded by kindness and opportunity.

By donating, you’re not just funding a new beginning — you’re helping restore safety, dignity, and belonging.
