5km ran every day in October - 31 consecutive days

Behind their smiles and slick service hospitality workers can fall upon hard times just like anybody else. Ours is a stressful industry, with long hours, high pressure environments and physically demanding work. We are here to offer financial, physical and psychological support to those who need it.

Story

Throughout October, I'll be running 5k every day, all in aid of the incredible Hospitality Action. That's 5k a day, for 31 days, covering a total of 155km.

This challenge means far more to me than just running. I've held myself accountable to run as much as I can this year, and, lo and behold, each run has gotten easier. Encouraging myself to go for run hasn't come naturally (especially the morning after an awards ceremony), but seeing the improvements, both mentally and physically, has been incredible and motivated me to keep going.

There were plenty of days when I had to really talk myself into getting my trainers on and going outside. But with time, it's become something I actually look forward to.

I think running and hospitality have a lot in common in ways. You have to keep showing up even when you feel tired, and you see improvement through consistency. The industry can be demanding, but it has so much to give. It's given me so much, and I wouldn't change it for the world.

Over the 31 days, I'd love for anyone and everyone across the industry or family & friends to join me on a run. On 10th October, a group of us from The Grand will be at Poppleton Parkrun - the more of us from the industry there, the better. And if you'd like to keep up to date, follow me on Strava to see my progress.

And if running isn't your thing, come and walk, jog, or just turn up - the point is showing up every day, talking and contributing to your own journey.

Hospitality Action is a brilliant charity and I have seen it first hand support one of my teams after a team mate bereavement, I also know people who have benefitted from support from sponsorship money during hard times. I can't think of a better charity to support.

Please donate if you're able to, and if you'd like to join a run, just drop me or Emily (emily.howcroft@thegrandyork.co.uk) a message.
