I recently joined the Rotary Club of Horsham and love the Rotary motto ‘service above self.’ Since I’m a keen hiker, I decided to contribute through a challenge in Northwest Scotland at the end of May.

My goal is to walk 100 kilometres horizontally, and climb 10,000 meters vertically over a 9-day period, whatever the Scottish Highland weather may throw at me. Tough but doable!

I’m doing the challenge for ShelterBox, which provides emergency shelter and tools to people around the world made homeless by disasters. Given the increasing upheavals in the world today, this is a very worthy cause! ShelterBox also relates to my job, which involves managing tropical storm risk and monitoring/tracking tropical cyclones, which are some of the world’s most destructive natural disasters.

I’m hoping to raise at least £1,000 from my challenge, which will help pay for at least 5 tropical storms or Earthquake kits that help so many displaced people at the time of disaster.

For training, I’m doing double-figure mileage on the weekends on what qualifies as hills in southeast England. I’ll also spend a week in Snowdonia around Easter to practice some big-hill days back-to- back.

I hope to get lots of sponsors to help ShelterBox give more disaster relief to families all over the world.
