Andy's fundraiser for Alzheimer's Society

Drive to Sad Hill · 2 May 2025
Having seen the awful effects that Alzheimer's has, not only on those with the condition, but with their families and friends, I try and raise awareness and money for the Alzheimer's Society every year.
So this year I came up with the idea to drive a car that my good friend Chris and I saved from being scrapped, by stripping it entirely and rebuilding it, to Sad Hill Cemetery in Spain.
This little Mazda MK1 MX5 was rotten and broken when I found it in 2019, so I dragged it home. I rang my mate Chris to get him involved and we then learned how to fully strip a car, cut out panels, fabricated new metal, learnt to weld and rebuilt the engine. It took a few years as we only had 4 hours each week to work on it, plus covid stopped our progress too. In 2023 we completed it and it got through its first MOT. Then we garaged it. Dragged it out again for its second MOT, and then garaged it. The car has only done 50 miles since being rebuilt,
So it makes the perfect car for a challenge full of doubt and jeopardy!
Sad Hill Cemetery is in Spain. Built for the final showdown for The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly, it was left to be reclaimed by Mother Nature in 1968 once filming had completed. 10 years ago the location was rediscovered, and a group of volunteers brought it back to life. This year is its 10 year anniversary of it being revitalised.
As one of my favourite films ever, and in need of a destination, it seemed fitting to drive something that was left to rot and be reclaimed by the earth to a place that also suffered the same fate, only to be rediscovered and given a second life.
So...on the 2nd May, Chris and I set out in this tiny little car, dressed as 2 of the characters from the movie, and head for Spain. We've only booked the ferry. No hotels have been booked. The car hasn't been fully tested. We have no space for much luggage.
Will we make it? Will we end up at the side of the road? Will we become engulfed in flames at 70mph? Will we look utterly stupid?
