Mighty Strides for the future of The Usual Place

Dundee Kiltwalk 2025 · 17 August 2025 · Start fundraising for this event
In the heart of Dumfries & Galloway there is a cafe called The Usual Place which is more than just a place to meet for coffee, cake or macaroni - its a safe and inspiring environment where young people with additional support needs can change the trajectory of their lives and gain confidence, qualifications and employability skills.
Take Lewis, for example. When Lewis first joined us, he was shy, struggling with anxiety and the effects of bullying at school. With patience, guidance and hands-on experience, he gradually found his voice and discovered a passion for cooking and fulfilment through customer service. Today, Lewis has a job, can drive, is studying for SVQ in Professional Cookery, has gained experience of working with award winning chefs in fine dining and is now a confident, ambitious individual who can hold a conversation with anyone.
But for every Lewis, there are many others in our community waiting for the same chance. Without our work these young people face isolation and limited opportunities.
I am taking part in the Dundee Kiltwalk to raise funds for The Usual Place so that more young people can benefit from the training it offers and to give them a brighter future.
