Story
As a child, I wanted to join the Armed Forces and at the age of 16/17, I went to join only to be turned away due to medical reasons. I have still held the Armed Forces in the highest regards and wanted to do something to help those who fight to protect us all.
After these years of wondering how I can help the brave men and women, I have finally found my way to do this. By running 800km (497 miles) over 20 days for the 80th anniversary of D-day. I feel there would be no better time to do this and show my support. I will be averaging 40km each day for 20 days which is just below a marathon each day. I will be starting at the Albemarle Barracks outside of Newcastle and heading to the White Cliffs of Dover with a few stops along the way.
This is why I wanted to choose a charity such as Help For Heroes (H4H). I decided to read into the work they did and I was shocked at how much and what they do.
Every day, men and women have to leave their career in the Armed Forces as a result of physical or psychological wounds. H4H was founded in 2007, to provide direct, practical support for wounded, injured and sick Service Personnel, Veterans and their loved ones. Their mission is to deliver an enduring national network of support for our wounded and their families. We will inspire and enable those who have made sacrifices on our behalf to achieve their full potential.
They support veterans and their families in their homes and communities across the UK. This helps people improve their physical and mental health. They consider each individual and make sure the support given is tailored to them. This may be counselling, funding equipment, helping people manage their health conditions and navigating support systems, welfare support, joining physical activities, wellbeing support, joining social activities, self guided help or signposting.
