🚸 Each year, I use a week of my vacation time to volunteer for the Newman Holiday Trust, which is a charity that provides week-long residential holidays for children with special needs.

🏝️ As well as giving the children an amazing holiday, it's often the only opportunity their parents may get to take much-needed respite - all whilst their child has a once-in-a-lifetime holiday!

👨‍👦 At each Newman Trust Holiday roughly 30 adults give their time to care for 22 children — and as a carer, you look after a child 24/7 for the full week. These children have a range of disabilities, and all children are entirely dependent on adults for their safety and welfare.

👩‍⚕️ Most volunteers are from regular backgrounds — personal trainers, accountants, nurses — who escape their "real life" for one week to do this. They are amazing.

We do a range of different activities with the children — 🎨 arts & crafts, ⚽ sports, 🥇 talent shows, 🚒 fire brigade visits, 🏊 swimming, 🏰 bouncy castle, 🐅 animal park visit, 🎡 theme park visit, 🎤 singing, 🕺 dance, 🍽️ we eat together and 🪁 we play games — one of which involves cold baked beans, custard, shaving foam and Wotsits. Best not to ask...

It's totally outside my comfort zone but it's honestly my favourite week of the year

💰 The whole charity is funded by donations, and is completely run by volunteers. No workers, at any level, are paid — not even those people organising the holidays throughout the year.

🧸 £𝟓 can pay for sensory toys.

🧪 £𝟓𝟎 can buy equipment for 25 children to make slime!

🎒 £𝟕𝟓𝟎 can provide one child with a week-long holiday.

👪 £𝟏𝟓,𝟎𝟎𝟎 can fund a whole holiday for 20 children.

The charity offers the highest levels of service for the children. Every year the Newman Holiday Trust are inspected by Ofsted - the UK's official inspection services - and every year since 2019 they've been rated the highest level of "𝗢𝘂𝘁𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴" ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

It's been a privilege to witness how the Newman Holiday Trust be transformative for everyone involved — the children, the parents and the helpers themselves. It truly changes lives. 🌠

About the charity

The Newman Holiday Trust

RCN 326429
Established in 1981, the Newman Holiday Trust began by running a one week summer holiday for children with special needs. The Trust now provides holidays for about 130 children with special needs aged four to sixteen each year, in various locations around the UK. Due to the high level of skilled care they require or financial circumstances, the children selected for these breaks would not otherwise receive a holiday. The holidays provide a range of fun activities in a safe and supportive environment and use a care ration of one helper to one child at all times. The Trust is an entirely voluntary organization and owes its success to over 200 people who dedicate their free time to helping these children. This voluntary structure ensures that every penny raised goes directly towards a child's holiday.
