Story
December nights are long and cold.
Even here in the south, they're more than 16 hours per 24, and the cold can and does kill. For the hundreds of thousands of homeless people in the UK, it's the most brutal time of the year.
At my latitude, there's a total of (almost exactly) 500 hours of night in the month. As these are the hardest, most dangerous hours if you're homeless (not that it's easy in the day), I'm proposing to walk/run at least 500k, and to do most of those kilometres between sunset and sunrise. I'll start on December 1st, and hope to have passed the 500k point by Christmas.
I don't know how much I'll raise, but I've set the target at £500. It's an expensive time (the festive period classically, and the cost of living crisis currently), but if you find you can give even a little present to Crisis this Christmas, you'd be doing a kind thing for people who really need it.
Crisis
All of us need a decent home – to be healthy and to thrive. Currently though, this basic human need isn’t being met for so many people across the UK. This is unacceptable. At Crisis we work side by side with thousands of people each year as they find ways out of homelessness. We provide practical support to help people access benefits, healthcare services, employment opportunities, and more. Our main aim is to relieve the huge pressure of homelessness, by helping people find safe and affordable homes as quickly as possible. We prioritise supporting people who are facing the most complex barriers to ending their homelessness and often have nowhere else to turn. As well as helping to end homelessness for individuals, we work to address the root causes that push people into homelessness in the first place. We campaign on the political changes needed to end homelessness for good and conduct research to understand and highlight the scale, causes and consequences of homelessness.
