Story
Hi,
I am Cpl Ambu Lingden, a serving member in the Queen’s Own Gurkha Logistics Regiment, currently deployed in the Falkland Islands. My team members, LCpl Sanjip Rai, Cpl Ashkrit Gurung, LCpl Henangsu Limbu, LCpl Sumit Thapa and Pte Bishalbabu Khadka, are raising funds for the SSAFA Armed Forces Charity by organising the 40 KM Doko Challenge.
On 22 Sept 23, In the memory of those who liberated the Falkland Islands. Sixteen volunteers from BFSAI will complete the 40 KM Doko challenge, the distance from the Mount Pleasant Complex to Gurkha Memorial, Stanley, Falkland. The 40 KM challenge is a relay where 16 runners will run carrying 10kg, and each individual will cover 2.5km.
The event will help to enhance team cohesion, maintain high physical fitness, and develop leadership amongst all participants. Moreover, BFSAI Tri-service personnel will have an opportunity to familiarise themselves with the famous “Doko Run” to raise the funds.
The challenge is inspired by the traditional Gurkha Recruitment Doko race, an uphill sprint in the Himalayan foothills carrying a traditional Nepali Doko basket on the back with 25 kg. Potential recruits are expected to complete the 5 km courses in under 46 minutes to join the prestigious Brigade of Gurkhas.
What is a Doko?
A traditional Nepalese conical-shaped basket, usually hand woven from bamboo, fitted with shoulder straps and a 'namlo' (head strap) to support the load. The baskets are used to carry a whole host of things, from clothing to bricks.
Please join us in raising vital funds to support serving men and women, veterans and families who will call on SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity for help in time of need.
We will be incredibly grateful for any contributions given to this worthwhile cause. This challenge will be significantly influenced and motivated by your support.
Thank you!
