Raising money in memory of Nicky Efendic

Kath Bellenie is raising money for The Friends of the Milestone School
In memory of Nicky Efendic
The Friends charity was created to support The Milestone School, one of the largest special needs schools in the country and a Specialist School for Communication and Interaction. The school & associated charity aims to remove obstacles and enable access to learning with each child having an individual plan according to his or her very specific needs. Situated in Gloucester, there are in excess of 320 pupils aged between 2 and 16 years. The pupils possess any or all of the following; - Severe Learning Difficulty (SLD), Profound & Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD) or are on the Severe Autistic Spectrum (ASC). Developing life skills and as much independence as possible through personalised and appropriate support is as important if not more than following a curriculum. The Friends Charity acts not only as a fundraising body but also as an association to develop effective and positive relationships between the staff, parents and all others associated with the school. Recognising the budget challenges facing all schools, the charity was created to benefit the pupils of the school beyond any infrastructure, running costs or general maintenance incurred by the school. The funds raised are used to provide • funding for school trips (theatre, museum, circus, shopping trips etc) • residential weeks and other activities inside (visiting theatre companies, musicians etc.) or • extra & specific resources (e.g. IT or communications

Story

In March 2020, the world for so many of us changed forever. Nicky, who was loved so much and by so many, and who has given us so much love and laughter, passed away.

There are so many lovely words I have heard used to describe Nicky: bright, fun, empathetic, energetic, brave, enthusiastic, graceful, welcoming: these are just some of the words used to describe her. But the key word that springs to mind when we think of Nicky is that she was kind. Kind to everybody, kind at all times, and kind without ever expecting anything in return.

It's especially difficult that we haven't been able to all get together to share the pain of our loss, and of course our happy memories, at a memorial service to celebrate her life. Whilst we wait for this opportunity to all join together, in the meantime here is an opportunity for us to honour Nic's life through our own act of kindness. Nicky made so many people's lives immeasurably better through her kindness, and one way this was so remarkable was through her work as a special needs teacher at the Milestone School in Gloucester. To carry on sharing her love for the children she taught, we are raising funds to be able to offer care to families at the Milestone School when they need it through Nicky's Fund. This fund will be used to support the students and families at the school to make life more fun and a bit easier when times are difficult; for example, fun days out, respite care, etc.

Any donation you can offer in Nicky's name will be very gratefully received, and will be used entirely towards this purpose by the Friends of the Milestone School. Give what you can, but do take a part of Nicky with you and give kindly. Thank you.
