Anthony Nolan saves the lives of people with blood cancer. Founded in 1974, by growing our register of stem cell donors, conducting research and supporting patients, Anthony Nolan cures blood cancer and blood disorders. But we need to do more. Without you, there is no cure.

Story

With two years to prepare (thanks COVID) - of which I admittedly did very little - I just about managed to drag my lardy behind around the streets of Newcastle in 2021, and in the process managed to raise the best part of a grand for the amazing charity, Anthony Nolan, who save the lives of people with a blood cancers by matching people willing to donate their stem cells to people who desperately need a lifesaving transplant.

Problem is, again due to COVID, the organisers changed the route. So the Anthony Nolan people told me that this year doesn't really count as an official GNR, and that I had to return in 2022 and do it all over again on the proper route. So I'm back, hoping that my knees stop hurting by then, to yet again avenge my kids' stem cell shortfall (and my advancing age meaning that I am no longer eligible to be a donor) by trying to fundraise once more to allow the charity to continue to perform their incredible work.

BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE.

My usual approach to this sort of thing is to follow a training programme, lose a bit of weight, actually get *kind of* in shape… Then buy a burger on the way home, and sit on my bum for the next six months. So instead I’ll be trying to capitalise on the challenge to make a longer-lasting change to my own health too, and as a type A, results-motivated personality, I’ll do this by taking part in a race every month this year. So get ready for a year of running (and cycling, and even a bit of swimming) spam as I continue to fight my love of eating and sitting on my bottom, and attempt to raise some cash for Anthony Nolan’s lifesaving work in the process.
