Story
We are Adam and Alex aka Team Rusty Rhinos
On the 24th of June 2010 we will start our third charity rally from London to the Western Sahara desert and then returning back to London
(For more information on our progress, check out our web site at http://www.rustyrhinos.com)
The challenge
Travel in a loop, starting and finishing in London, but covering the Western Sahara desert in Morocco. Our initial car choice was going to see us return to the Japanese 4x4 Suzuki SJ, this time in a 1.3L engine instead of the 1.0L engine we used on our first rally to Mongolia. However after too many mechanical problems and the time running out, we've decided to use our 1963 Land Rover which is no stranger to the Sahara! What will be new to the Land Rover is the extreme temperatures of the Sahara. We are taking extra precautions to try and keep the car cool, you can read all about this on our blog website at http://moroccan-roadtrip.blotspot.com)
We will be on our own, with no support team or backup of any kind and no other teams. The challenge should take 3 to 4 weeks but we've somehow got to do it in 18 days. Given the age and the speed of the car, this is certainly going to require long days and nights of driving.
Visit http://www.rustyrhinos.com for more information on the event.
Why on earth are we doing this?
Our aim is to raise money for Mercy Corps while having fun exploring the world in a different way. Mercy Corps supports rural communities and herding families through economic, educational and agricultural programmes. Please visit http://www.mercycorps.org.uk for further information on Mercy Corps.
We hope that you will be generous with your donations, even if you can only afford £1, this will really help us reach our target which we would love to exceed.
It goes without saying, that we also plan on having a great time on this amazing adventure while helping a worthwhile cause.
The car
A 1963 Land Rover that is so old, it is tax exempt! While the Land Rover is a legend off road and it can take quite a beating, make no mistake, the car will be slow and will have none of the comfort features you see in modern cars. We have fitted a stereo and some sporty seats, 2 essential items. Apart from that, the only other creature comfort is a pen holder!
