We breed and train guide dogs to give blind people freedom and mobility

Story

On the 24th April 2016 our beloved mum, Janet Molloy passed away. She was a kind-hearted, loving and generous mother and friend to so many. We felt that in her memory it would be good to continue the legacy she left by helping others. This gave us the idea to enter the Great North Run, which Kerry and I are going to train for over the coming months. This concludes in Newcastle on 11 September where we will run the half marathon. We will be raising funds for Guide Dogs. Guide Dogs played a huge role in her life over the last 10 years and was a charity that was close to her heart given her selfless nature.

Since she started working with Guide Dogs we have had a constant stream of Guide Dog puppies entering our house to be trained by Mum. These dogs ranged from the first 'Delsa', to a German Shepard 'Fliss', to the most recent 'Georgie', not to mention the numerous others in between. We always knew that Mum would be busy on a Tuesday taking the Guide Dogs to Oakwell for a walk and training. Also, on a Friday morning she would be busy at Puppy Class, meeting with other puppy walkers and helping to train their Guide Dogs. Then she would be off on the bus/train, going to shops, cafes, shopping centres etc. to socialise the puppy and familiarise it with every day tasks and obstacles that a Guide Dog would face.

Mum was always helping others, whether it be fundraising, or collecting and dropping off Guide dogs up and down the country. It really was one of her passions and one which we feel she would want us to continue her association to. She would never say no to helping other puppy walkers with their dogs and was something which she was proud to represent.

As a family we are forever grateful to Guide Dogs for providing so many friends who mum thought so dearly of. Also, providing her with an opportunity to put her natural talent with dogs into practice which provided her with huge amounts of satisfaction, and us with immense pride in her work.

The ability to get around is vital in order to live a full life yet thousands of people with sight loss never leave home alone. We empower visually impaired people to do that and rely on the support of the public to fund the guide dog service.
