We support Ward 3 at The Great North Children's Hospital, where families live in a protective bubble. Whether it’s funding cutting-edge research, providing emotional and practical support for families, or ensuring children can still be children, everything we do is centred around care and hope.

Story

As some of you might know, Paula and myself didn`t only have Greg but for short period of time we once had two son`s.
Little Luke died in Newcastle General hospital on ward 21 on November 27th 1996, the day before Greg`s 7th birthday, he was only four years old.
This ward specialised in the care and treatment of what were known as "bubble babies". Luke was born with no immune system so he picked up any bugs, colds, virus`s and anything else that was doing the rounds at the time.
He spent the best part of 3 months in one room not being allowed to cross a red line that was around his bed, as the airflow above his bed was sterilised and free from harm.
He had chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant which failed. He then underwent surgery to have his spleen removed, he never regained consciousness again, 11 days later we were advised to turn off his ventilator and carry him across the red line.

This might seem a little frank, open and hard hitting, the reason for this is that I have never done any kind of self publicising media sponsorship before and never will again.

Even though our story has a sad ending, Paula and myself still feel very indebted to the work the nursing staff and doctors did which is why Maltby running club of which I have been a member of for 28 years have held an annual race in the memory of Luke where all the money taken and raised on the night goes to the "Bubble foundation". this is now in excess of £3.750.

I have been running full and half marathons for many years now, but felt I needed a goal to aim for, so Greg came up with the idea of trying to run 100 half marathons before my knees and hips are "shot" to bits by my 50th birthday, this will be on 5th June this year, where I will be running the Madrid half marathon. I understand that this doesn't seem a big challenge as the real work has now been done. but if you could help me raise £250 for the "Bubble foundation", then our total will be a nice round £4000.

I believe its even possible to donate via the mobile phone.

like the example below sending £2 to GBLB66

GBLB66£2   and send to the number 70070

Thanks for taking time out to read this epic drivel.

IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN.

Mick.
