Story
Thank you so much for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page!
I am running the Edinburgh marathon on Sunday 25 May for JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation). This charity is close to our family as my nephew, Joshua King, is type 1 diabetic.
On November 22 2009 Joshua’s life changed forever. Joshua was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes and will be insulin dependent for the rest of his life unless a cure is found. Joshua ended up in hospital due to being extremely ill. In fact a few more weeks of being undetected he would have been fighting for his life from DKA (diabetic ketoacidosis- a complication that occurs when the body cannot use sugar (glucose) as a fuel source because the body has no insulin or not enough insulin, and body fat is used instead).
Like many people we didn’t know the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. As a result our family have become supporters of JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) to raise awareness to others.
Type 1 diabetes has occurred because the bodies own immune system attacks and destroys cells on the pancreas that make insulin and the body stops making insulin altogether. Type 1 is a chronic condition that stays with people their entire life and they rely on multiple insulin injections or pump infusions everyday just to stay alive. This affects about 400,000 people in the UK 25,000 of them children is not caused by anything that the person with the condition, or their parents did or did not do.
