Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Maya is a 13 year old with cerebral palsy. Maya is unable to stand or walk independently and has recently undergone major corrective surgery at Great Ormond St hospital. She walks with her kaye walker but not only a year has passed since her surgery and her legs are pulling in together again as her spasticity is so strong.
There is a procedure known as SDR -Selective Dorsal Rhyzotomy - where specialists are able to go into the spine and cut the nerves that are sending the wrong message to the muscles which ultimately alleviates this spasticity. This procedure has been extremely successful in helping children like Maya move around more freely and there are many success stories where children have come on leaps and bounds and have walked independently.
Maya has been reviewed at Great Ormond St hospital very recently and we have been given the go ahead to have this life changing procedure which we are absolutely thrilled about. Unfortunately for us the operation is only funded by the NHS on children up to the age of 9 years old. Maya was reviewed to have this procedure at around the age of 7 years of age and we were told she was borderline to have the operation. Obviously this is painful news as she could of had it done all these years ago and possibly have avoided the vast amount of corrective surgery that she had to endure last year.
We need to raise just over £21,000 for her operation which is planned for sometime next year. I really hope that we can all pull together and make this happen for our little Maya as she deserves this chance so much. She is a beautiful soul inside and out and as her Mother I wish so much that she doesn't have to struggle so much with her mobility. I wish her to be able to lead a fuller, more independent life and have the chance to be able to have this procedure and the chance to change her life dramatically, to avoid further invasive surgery and to ultimately walk on her own unaided.
We appreciate any donation that you are able to give and thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Lets get Maya moving!!
If we hopefully exceed our target then the money will be used for much needed pre and post physiotherapy. The outcome of SDR and long term benefits are increased greatly the more physiotherapy and hard work that is put in pre and post surgery. We will be able to pay for a private physiotherapist to come into our home and work with Maya which will also not be available on the NHS.
Should we exceed the target amount (or if we do not raise enough funds, or if they cannot be used for any reason) the funds will go to the general funds of Tree of Hope to assist other sick children.
