Story
"A butterfly lights beside us like a sunbeam, and for a brief moment its glory and beauty belong to our world... But then it flies on again, and though we wish it could have stayed, we feel so lucky to have seen it at all."
Sixteen years have passed since our precious son Luke was born sleeping at 08.47am on Tuesday 5th February 2008. We think about him every day and he lives on in our hearts and family as a much loved son, brother, grandson, nephew and cousin. 💫
We were told at a routine scan at 24 weeks that our much longed for baby had severe spina bifida and hydrocephalus, which was confirmed at Kings College Hospital a day later. Unfortunately we were not referred to Shine (formerly ASBAH) at either of the scans and did not come across it in our research until weeks later. The team at Kings have great expertise and with careful consideration guided us towards taking a decision to terminate the pregnancy. I struggle with this decision every day, despite knowing that Luke was extremely poorly.
Our involvement with Shine began when we were planning Luke's funeral service as we wanted to support people living with this condition. Supporting Shine since 2008 has given us a positive focus for our grief and loss and has enabled us, together with our amazing family and friends, to help other children like Luke and support their families.
Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to support Shine as they receive your money quickly, and if you’re a UK taxpayer Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation to help the money go even further in helping those who need it most.
Thank you for supporting Shine in memory of Luke, it is so comforting and deeply appreciated.
Love Ali, Paul, Erin, Beth & Buddy! x
