Story
I'm raising money again this year for Scottish Hazards, a charity I'm proud to be a trustee of, which is working tirelessly to make Scotland a safer, healthier and fairer place to work and live.
My wee brother went to work on 04 August 2005 and he didn't make it home to his fiancée. He died in a work-related electrical incident, which could and should have been prevented. Finding Scottish Hazards in the aftermath of Michael's death was a lifeline to our family and I want to continue to do all I can to help support the charity's work.
We strive each and every day to prevent injury, illness and worse, caused by work. But we need funding to maintain and then further increase our efforts.
My first event of this year will be the Glasgow Kiltwalk. It's particularly poignant for two reasons.
I will be walking with another bereaved sister, Nicky Midgley, sister of Simon who lost his life, along with his partner Richard, in the fire at Cameron House Hotel, on the banks of Loch Lomond, where the Glasgow Kiltwalk finish line is.
The event is also taking place on International Workers' Memorial Day, an annual event when those who have lost loved ones through work come together with trade unionists, campaigners and others, to remember our dead and renew our commitment to fight like hell for the living.
Then, in August, the month in which Michael lost his life, I'll be jumping on a bike to tackle Ride the North, an event in Angus, with routes of 70 and 100 miles. Colm Allen has been cajoled into taking part in this one too. He's responsible for my longest cycle yet...around 40 miles. But still plenty of training to do in order to be able to take on, not only the distance, but also the plentiful hills en route.
Your support is, as ever, hugely appreciated and will help encourage with both the training and the events themselves!
