Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my/our JustGiving page. And for all your love and support for me, since I said goodbye to Dad, in September.
Dad; my left arm, my strong legs, and the voice (that will now only ever be) in my head and my *heavy* heart that tells me to “keep pedaling”.
On Saturday 30 April 2022, I will honour the promise I made to Dad, in the days before he died, and pedal around the Isle of Wight; to raise awareness and funds for the Isle of Wight Prostate Cancer Support Group.
The 100km Round The Island Route was a pedaling adventure that Dad and I had planned to ride together, one Sunday in August, last year. We rode 40km together, on the Saturday, then on the Sunday he said he wasn’t feeling up to 'the big one', so I rode it on my own (for both of us). That precious 40km (pictured) turned out to be our last ride together. My Dad died of advanced prostate cancer, one month later, in September.
When Dad was diagnosed, in February, he turned to the Support Group and became their “much-respected Treasurer and Trustee”. Dad also helped to set up free PSA tests for men on the island; screening which isn’t routinely offered. Dad was all in - on his bike and in life - until he died. PROUD.
The 100km HILLY route is a mental and emotional challenge, beyond measure. Booking the Hovercraft, hard. Writing the JustGiving blurb, hard, etc. I'm finding life without Dad indescribably HARD. Losing a parent - let alone my Dad who I spoke to every day at least once a day on the phone, and who loved riding his bike and swimming in the sea, just like me - is like nothing I've ever experienced.
I won’t be riding the Route on my own, this time. I’ll be riding it with Becky. Already an ‘all kinds of incredible’ friend who’s lived every moment with me since Dad’s diagnosis, she then went and bought a bike! From "not much of a pedaler hun" to 100 HILLY km in just a few months; PROUD. I cannot wait to celebrate Dad (and our YOU’RE THE BEST friendship), together.
