Story
This year I am doing the Brighton Marathon to pool towards my son's (Daiman) event in aid of the Surrey Normandy veterans! We're trying to raise a total of £5,000 to send the veterans to France to remember their fallen friends. Click on the 'Team' to see Daiman's page or the combined total we've raised so far.
Below is the information about Daiman's challenge and why he's doing it.
The heroes of WWII are all but forgotten. Unbeknownst to many, the last remaining survivors of the war make the pilgrimage to Normandy every year to the remember the fallen, who, unlike them, did not return.
As you can imagine, the cost of visiting Normandy every year for veterans of this age is substantial. This year the National Lottery have removed their funding and the veterans from the Normandy Veterans Association (Surrey branch) are having great difficulty raising the money needed for the trip.
If we can raise £5,000, every member from the NVA Surrey branch can go to Normandy!
So,
This June, Daiman Law, Zach West and Tom Johnston will recreate the famous Operation Frankton raid by the Cockleshell Heroes in 1942. Our challenge will see us kayak some 85 miles down the Gironde estuary in the rough seas of the Bay of Biscay. Upon reaching Bordeaux, we will head back downstream to the small hamlet of St.Genes-de-Blaye, where we will abandon our kayaks and embark on our 85 mile run to the finish, in the village of Ruffec.
We hope to complete the challenge in four days; two days kayaking and two days running. We will be camping througout the event and hope to celebrate the completion of our event in the very same hotel/bar/building the Cockleshell Heroes laid low.
